There’s always plenty to do at Headland Homestead

New barn, greenhouse, and outbuildings

Although if often feels like we are doing things a bit backwards, our hemp endeavors are indeed funding our future forever home and all structures on the property that will support a thriving homesteading lifestyle. We are finishing up a 60 foot long drying barn with extended sides to house equipment, building chicken coops and storage buildings, and are always improving our current structures. How is it that even on nearly 7 acres a family of three never seems to have enough space to house their projects, hobbies, and livelihood? We are truly blessed.

Growing our own food

Here on our homestead, one of our greatest joys and priviledges is the ability to grow a sizable amount of our own fresh produce each year. We start most of our garden in the greenhouse so we can raise our own seedlings to transplant into the fields as the weather warms. Our little one particularly loves the ability to pick her own snacks, keeping herself busy while we work on building the barn or weeding the hemp. If you ever visit us over the summer, you’re sure to see plenty growing, especially many rows of our favorites: husk cherries, peas, tomatoes, and beans. We also make sure to grow plenty of fresh herbs to use in cooking and pickling…and hopefully soon, our salves! Our calendula and chamomile harvests are dried and eagerly awaiting to be infused into something magical.

pickling, mending, preserving, brewing, it never ends…

Many of our evenings, after long days of work, are spent together with family and friends creating, making, or transforming something. We pickle our own cucumbers, beans, and zucchini, brew our own wine, we dry herbs and flowers for infusing or dying purposes, mend our favorite well-worn clothing, and when all these happy tasks near an end, we sit down together and plan for the next season’s gardens and crops, projects and adventures.
